Dogs have been used as home guardians for tens of thousands of years. Most dogs can be trained to some level of protection. While not every dog has what it takes to be a true man-stopper, almost all dogs can be trained to some level of home security. Even a barking alarm dog can drive off a potential intruder. This is our three-step process for training a home protection dog.
One: Basic obedience and impulse control
Two: Boundaries and watch command
Three: Stranger agitation and protection scenario practice
We mostly use a muzzle for our home protection dogs. I use tug games to teach the “off.” With a 9 week puppy, I practice impulse control. Getting the dog to STOP chasing the flirt pole and come to heal. Same thing with the Jolly Ball or the spring pole. The FIRST word we instill is… NO! No means NO! Then “Come” then “Stay” and “Watchem” to start developing suspicion of strangers and to develop defense drive. Most dogs today are trained in prey drive. We work on a good threat display as well. 90% of all potential problems can be resolved with a well-trained dog giving a serious threat display. Few people do this. It seems folks are confused about the differences between police and sport dogs, and actual home guarding dogs. What are you doing for poison-proofing? Years of police and sports training can be undone with a .99-cent can of Beenie Weenies! Any serious criminal knows this!
