Obedience & Man-Stopper Training
Looked at as a breed or even a dog type, the mastiff on the whole has more natural defense/guard instinct than any other type or breed of dog.
They seem to be made for such work!
From personal experience, a nice pit is more manageable in the home than a mastiff, and a much cleaner animal as well. A determined and tenacious pit will do everything that a large mastif might do. Pits are also easier for a person of most size and strength/ability to use as a personal protection dog. My pit riding shotgun in my vehicle on trips to ensure my safety away from home is much preferred over a mastiff in the front seat.
Pits suck for guard dogs…
A guard dog can only do its job if it is with you and able to do the job when you need it. The most dangerous thing I do is jog 5K three to four times a week. A malinois can do that but is hard to live with all the time. If crated, it cannot do it. Mastiffs have have shorter lives and too many joint problems to for jogging and would have to be left at home. You would be very hard pressed to find a capable lab. The only choice in this list that I would consider is the pitbull as they have proven themselves to be very capable dogs for my needs, but why are you limiting us to just these four choices? Why not the Airedale Terrier? Clean, athletic, and capable.
Okay…
